Lexus GX 550 arrives in South Africa: Luxury off-road redefined

The Lexus GX 550 sets a new standard in the premium SUV segment, seamlessly blending luxurious sophistication with formidable off-road capability.

Lexus has proudly launched the all-new GX 550 in South Africa, establishing a new benchmark for premium off-road SUVs. This remarkable vehicle masterfully combines potent performance, sophisticated design and cutting-edge technology, catering to urban drivers and adventurous off-road enthusiasts.

The Lexus SUV line-up in South Africa includes the flagship LX, the on-road luxury RX, the fully electric RZ, the mid-size NX, and the urban compact UX, each designed with Lexus’s signature commitment to excellence.

The evolution of the Lexus GX: A legacy of capability and luxury

Familiar in North American and Eurasian markets for over two decades, the Lexus GX debuts in South Africa. The first-generation GX 470 (2002) blended Toyota Land Cruiser Prado toughness with premium comfort, featuring a 4.7L V8 and full-time 4WD.

The second-generation GX 460 (2009) introduced a more efficient 4.6L V8 and an advanced Crawl Control. Subsequent updates, including a bold redesign in 2019 with sharper styling, an Off-Road Package, and Lexus Safety System+, solidified the GX’s reputation for capability and luxury.

New GX 550: Bold design, modern engineering

Built on the robust GA-F global architecture platform, the new GX retains its traditional body-on-frame construction while integrating modern advancements for enhanced stability, handling and overall performance. Its bold, sculpted design commands attention on any terrain.

The distinctive thick, squared-off bonnet and pulled-back front pillars highlight its off-road prowess, while a wider stance and lower height enhance visual appeal and stability. The signature spindle grille and sleek LED headlamps provide a sophisticated, dynamic look, with high-positioned headlights and radiator cooling ducts designed for durability on rough terrain.

Glenn Crompton, the vice president of marketing at Lexus South Africa, said its blend of Lexus luxury and craftsmanship with strong V6 performance and enhanced 4×4 capabilities, particularly in the Overtrail grade, is suitable for diverse South African landscapes. The seven-seat flexibility of the SE grade caters to families.

A cabin designed for luxury and driver focus

The interior ambiance is open and calming, featuring high-quality materials. Available in five- and seven-seat configurations, the Overtrail variant offers unique interior enhancements with durable yet refined materials for off-road adventures.

Powerful performance and off-road capability

The new GX is powered by a potent twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 260kW and 650Nm, paired with a 10-speed direct shift automatic transmission for dynamic acceleration and robust towing capability.

Extensive global testing has validated its durability and reliability. Despite its off-road capabilities, the GX offers a smooth and composed on-road ride with a finely tuned chassis, enhanced body rigidity and active noise control.
