New 48V hybrid 4×4 powertrain for Renault Duster and Bigster
Electric assistance meets off-road capability, reducing turbo lag and improving fuel efficiency across a new SUV range.
In a bid to ‘make everyday adventure even more accessible’, Renault has announced a new drivetrain for the Duster and its larger sibling, the Bigster.
As a reminder, the updated Duster, which will be built in India, was revealed towards the end of January, with Renault confirming the revised model for our market.
The new powertrain features a 48V mild-hybrid internal combustion engine producing 110kW and 230N.m of torque – the latter delivered to a four-wheel drivetrain via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Paddle shifters will also be present to allow manual override. The setup is supported by an additional 87N.m, sourced from an electric motor. The hybrid 150 4×4 powertrain also offers electric-only driving.
Whether this powertrain will make its way to the local Duster lineup remains unconfirmed.
The refreshed derivative was unveiled with the automaker’s E-Tech 160, Turbo TCe 100, and Turbo TCe 160 units. The E-Tech 160 powertrain pairs a 1.8l, four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors – the latter fed by a 1.4kWh battery – for a combined power output of 118kW.
Turbo TCe 100 and Turbo TCe 160 are internal combustion-only, with the former and latter coming in the shape of a 74kW/160N.m 1.0l turbo-triple and 118kW/280 N.m 1.3l turbocharged four-pot. While the Turbo TCe 100 is exclusively available with a six-speed manual gearbox, the more powerful ICE-only unit can also be had with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
