Man arrested for ‘raping’ teen near Hoedspruit

The teenager was sleeping in the early hours of Sunday morning when she was disturbed by a cellphone light in the room, according to the police.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a rape incident that occurred last Sunday in Santeng village, outside Hoedspruit.

“It is alleged that the 19-year-old victim was sleeping in the early hours of Sunday morning when she was disturbed by a cellphone light that was shining in the room,” said Hoedspruit police spokesperson Sergeant Livhuwani Mulaudzi.

According to the information provided to the Hoedspruit police, the victim allegedly woke up and tried to light a candle, as their household had no electricity, Letaba Herald reported.

“The suspect, Simon Monyela, grabbed the matchbox from the victim then proceeded to rape her in the dark. After the incident took place, the victim asked the suspect if she could go drink some water in the kitchen. The suspect agreed, following her closely behind”, Mulaudzi further told the Herald.

In the kitchen, a light shone in through the window, which is believed to be light coming from a neighbor’s house.

“The victim managed to identify the suspect before could escape through a window,” concluded Mulaudzi.
