WATCH: Pledge to ditch plastic this World Oceans Day

Today, 8 June marks World Oceans Day, a global initiative to celebrate the ocean and try to prevent detrimental human activity from further destroying it, Southlands Sun reports.

Organisations from around the world are trying to get more people to pledge not to use plastic, to move towards a healthier ocean.

On the United Nation site, it describes World Oceans Day as a day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life.

“They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. The purpose of the day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.”
