34-year-old doctor arrested for dealing in dagga and nyaope

It is alleged the doctor is linked to a hospital near Makhado.


A doctor was arrested on Wednesday, July 5, after police followed up on information on drug dealings, Review Online reports.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the sting operations, which saw the suspects arrested, were part of a move to deal a severe blow to drug dealing in the province.

The doctor had been doing community service around the Waterval area, outside Makhado, and was linked to a hospital there.

“Information led the police to a house where the doctor and his accomplice, 27, were apprehended,” Ngoepe said.

The following items were confiscated during the arrest:

  • Nine sachets of nyaope
  • Four rocks (hard drugs)
  • Two smoking pipes
  • One plastic bag containing dagga.

Ngoepe said the value and weight of the drugs would be determined soon.

In another related success, police arrested a 28-year-old suspect in Lebowakgomo for dealing in drugs, and the following items were confiscated:

  • 297 rock drugs valued at R14 850
  • R1 302 in cash

Furthermore, in Mahwelereng, police arrested four suspects, between the ages of 27 and 54, for selling and possession of dagga.

“A total of 111 sachets of dagga were confiscated with the street value of R2 220 as well as cash amounting to R3 000,” Ngoepe said.

The suspects will soon appear before different courts on charges of possession of and dealing in drugs.

“Sting operations such as these will be conducted continuously to rid the affected areas of this scourge,” Ngoepe concluded.
