ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) deputy president Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe has died at the age of 64.
Her death was confirmed by the ANC on Sunday morning. They hailed her a “lifelong activist and servant of the people”.
Mnganga-Gcabashe died on Saturday, but details around her death have yet to be confirmed.
“Comrade Lungi passed away on Saturday, 17 May 2025, leaving behind a powerful legacy of principled leadership, humility, and unyielding love for her people.
“Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts and in the liberation movement as a whole. She was a beacon of calm in turbulent times, a voice of reason when the noise was loud, and a steady hand in the rebuilding of our country’s democracy,” the party added.
A life of service to the ANC
Mnganga-Gcabashe joined the ANC in her hometown of KwaMashu, KZN, during Apartheid.
After the party was unbanned, she helped the party recruit women in the province to the ANC and its women’s league.
She served for seven years as a full-time ANC organiser in KZN before resigning in 1997. She later joined the provincial legislature and was appointed to the Regional Executive Committee of the ANCWL, Acting Deputy Secretary, and then Secretary of the women’s league in the area.
She was appointed Provincial Deputy Chairperson of the ANCWL under Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and later Chairperson, while being elected to the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC).
She was elected deputy president of the national ANC Women’s League in July 2023.
At the time of her passing, she was a member of Parliament and chairperson of the portfolio committee on tourism.
