It has been a frantic and traumatic last few hours for Lerato Maloka, after the Sedibeng mayor was kidnapped in Alberton, Gauteng.
Maloka and her driver were leaving a home in the area on Friday night when they were hijacked and kidnapped.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the owner of the house reported the matter to an individual who then informed the mayor’s husband.
“The husband went to report the matter at Dawnpark Police Station. A team was immediately established and the Police’s Rapid Response Services via 10111 call centre broadcast a lookout with the vehicle’s description,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
Mayor reunited with her family
The car was recovered by Katlehong police around midnight, and two hours later, reports came through that the mayor and driver had been found unharmed.
“The investigating officer will be obtaining the statements of both victims as investigations continue,” added Muridili.
A manhunt for suspects is underway.
