Bethal police warn against job scam

Bethal police said a scam syndicate is again targeting job seekers, reports the Ridge Times.
The syndicate approaches learners during school breaks and after school, pretending to offer them jobs.
The criminals tell them they are looking for people who can help them with casual work.
They offer to pay about R150 after completion of the work.
The scammers convince them to give them their cellphones or wallets because they are not allowed to keep them with them while they are working.
Once they hand these over to the criminals, they tell them to wait where they are, while they go and collect the others that will work with them.
The police warned the community to be on the lookout and to be extra careful when someone approaches them and offers a job that pays immediately.
“These syndicates know that people are desperate for money and are targeting vulnerable groups.
“When someone approaches and offers you a job and wants you to give him or her your belongings, you must know it is a scam,” said Constable Thomas Mogadime, spokesperson for Bethal Police Station.
“We urge learners and the community at large not to be deceived by these criminals and if they have been approached or have been a victim of these criminals, to report it to the police immediately at 017 647 9929/30.”
