R200k raised for the NSPCA and the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary

A charity dinner that was held to raise money for the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary in the Western Cape and the NSPCA has been a success, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reports .

The event was organised by Fiona Allenberg, Sharon Banner, Elizabeth van Staaden and Dodi Hockley, who are passionate about the work the sanctuary does.

This event, which was held at Corner Café in Craighall Park, raised a total of R200 000 for the NSPCA and the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary. Throughout the night, there was a silent auction that also helped to raise R121 000.

Jonathan Sherwin, who is an animal rights activist, has been trying to prevent these animals from being inhumanely slaughtered for their skins. He said that donkeys were incredibly important to people living in rural areas, and it is devastating for them to lose their donkeys.

Sharon Banner, one of the women who organised the charity event, said she has always been involved in helping domestic animals but had not worked with donkeys before.

But when she found out about a donkey auction in Hartswater, near the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary, Banner felt she had to help.

“We wanted to get the word out about the plight of these poor animals,” said Banner.
