ANC to blame for ‘shocking’ R26m waste in Joburg – Mashaba

Mashaba, at the tabling of the city's 2015-2016 Integrated Annual Report, blamed maladministration for the 'fruitless' and 'wasteful' expenditure incurred.

The City of Joburg, in tabling its 2015-2016 Integrated Annual Report, has said its audit outcomes show an overall regression compared with the previous financial year.

The auditor-general’s report, mayor Herman Mashaba said, “confirms the rampant maladministration witnessed under the previous ANC-led government”.

During 2014-15, six out of 12 city entities had clean audit outcomes while “only four entities achieved this outcome in the 2015-16 financial year.

“In the current reporting period, the total balance for fruitless and wasteful expenditure reached R26 268 000, with R7 441 000 being incurred in the 2015-16 reporting period,” said Mashaba.

“Under the previous administration, a shocking lack of attention to financial management practices resulted in a failure to adequately investigate cases of unauthorised, irregular and fruitless and wasteful expenditure.”

“Similarly, the total balance for unauthorised expenditure reached R3 417 609 000 with R692 587 000.00 being incurred in 2015-16.”
