Man arrested in North West for possessing 14 hand grenades

Police received a tip-off about the explosives.


Police in the North West arrested a 38-year-old man after he was found in possession of 14 hand grenades in Khuma, Klerksdorp.

Spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh says an officer received a tip-off about the explosives on Saturday and followed up.

“The officer found the suspect at corner of Marumole and Lekoma Street, and searched him. A total of 14 MK 2 hand grenade were found in his possession.

“As a result, the suspect was immediately arrested for unlawfully being in possession of explosives, thus contravening  Section 128 of the Explosives Act, 1956,” said Myburgh.

Hawks to investigate

Police also established that the man was undocumented and possibly illegal in the country.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Stillfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the Hawks will take over and further investigate.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena thanked the community for alerting law enforcement.

The vital information helped avert a possible tragedy, he said.

Serial killer arrested in Limpopo

Meanwhile, an alleged serial rapist is expected to appear in the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday.

The 45-year-old is believed to be behind a string of rape cases in the province.

According to police, the alleged rapist has been causing terror among residents in Matjetje and Makhushane.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the man committed another rape in 2019.

He was unknown until he was linked through DNA evidence and became a person of interest and was ultimately linked to nine other rape cases.

The age range of his rape victims is between 15 and 36, and he is believed to have employed the same method of operation in all the incidents.

“He would prey on women walking during the night with male companions, threaten them with a knife, force them into the bushes and rape them,” Ledwaba said.
