WATCH: Durban gang boss and family’s final moments – multiple shootings turn city into warzone

Several drive-by shootings have occurred after the murder of Brandon 'Puff' Kalicharan, with the Wentworth area being turned into a warzone.

Murder of notorious gang leader

CCTV footage has captured the last moments of one of Durban’s notorious gang bosses and his family.

One of the most high-profile victims of a spate of recent drive-by shootings was Brandon ‘Puff’ Kalicharan, the leader of the 11th Street Gang. He was ironically known for using drive-by shootings to kill his rivals.

Kalicharan, his wife and teenaged daughter were killed on 21 March 2023 when their bakkie was sprayed with high-calibre bullets on Peters Road in Springfield Park.

Kalicharan and his wife were announced dead at the scene. Their daughter was found in a critical condition and rushed to hospital. She later succumbed to her injuries.

Bullets fly in Wentworth

Video footage shows how the Wentworth area has been turned into a warzone, as shootings have escalated in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) over the past week.

Gunshots, which sound like they are coming from high-calibre automatic rifles, were ringing in the air in Wentworth on Monday. Footage, taken from the window of a flat, shows how dangerous the area is at the moment.

Shootings escalate in KZN

According to The Citizen’s sister publication Southlands Sun, one person was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Croton Road, Wentworth, at around 2pm on Monday.

Children walking home from school were seen screaming and fleeing as the bullets were fired near them.

Tracey Williams, a community leader, told Southlands Sun that one of the bullets narrowly missed a five-year-old child and entered a flat that had a grandmother and small child inside.

Williams said even the police are in danger in the area.

“This is absolutely nonsense… We need more than the police in our community as even their vehicles are shot at, indicating the brazen lawlessness in which these shooters operate. We need urgent intervention in Wentworth,” she said.

At least five people were killed in drive-by shootings in separate incidents in the province last week.

Opposition parties slam police

The shootings have caught the attention of politicians in KZN, with opposition parties demanding answers from police.

IFP KZN community safety spokesperson Blessed Gwala accused the police of not having the capacity to stop the killings.

“In the case of KZN police, there is no effective crime intelligence. This is the main reason why police in this province are not able to stop the killings — they only react after the shooting and when people have already been killed,” he said.
