Girl, 2, seriously injured after alleged drunk driver ploughs through shack

A two-year old baby girl is fighting for her life after a Toyota double cab bakkie rammed into her parents’ bedroom in the early hours of Monday morning at around 01:00.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the driver of the bakkie was allegedly drunk.

“The toddler was asleep with her mother in their shack at David Diedericks avenue in Eersterust, east of Pretoria, when the alleged drunken driver bulldozed their shack with his vehicle. The neighbours quickly attended to the injured child and the police were called.

“The child was taken to the hospital in a serious but stable condition. The mother escaped the accident without injuries,” Shibambo said.

He said the suspect was arrested on the scene for drunken driving and reckless and negligent driving. “The police are making a plea to the drivers out there not to drink and drive, as it places people’s lives in danger and causes unnecessary pain and suffering,’ Shibambo pleaded.

He said the suspect will appear in the Pretoria magistrates court soon.
