UPDATE: Itireleng protesters take steps towards solutions in meeting

By Amanda Watson

The scheduled “9am” meeting started well after 10am because of the late arrival of representatives of protesters.

The MMC of housing made it clear to them that no provision was made for their demands in the present budget. He acknowledged that councillor Farouk Essop had brought these matters to his attention.

The issue of electricity would be considered in the next budget. Immediate action will be given to waste management in Itireleng. Shacks will be remarked to identify residents when they are relocated.

The installation of taps will be considered in the next budget. Representatives indicated that they were only representing a certain section, and there were other representatives who may also want to be consulted.

The MMC stated he could work with different representatives, and they should identify one group only.

The meeting ended amicably.
