Centurion road closed indefinitely after ground gives way to sinkhole

The size of the sinkhole has been exacerbated by recent heavy rains in the region.

The R55 northbound is expected to remain closed indefinitely as a result of a sinkhole caused by last week’s heavy rains, Centurion Rekord reports.

“It’s going to be like that for a long time,” Laudium disaster management’s Ebrahim Dockrac said.

Engineers were said to have tested the ground area on Saturday in order to make an informed decision about urgent repairs.

Dockrac said the southbound lanes were converted into a single lane each way to alleviate traffic.

Meanwhile, a truck was reported to have partially fallen into a sinkhole, in front of a primary school in the area.

“The sinkhole developed long ago, it wasn’t attended to,” Dockrac said.

He said a total of five potholes had since developed in the Laudium and Erasmia area.
