Cop on the beat strikes the right notes with travellers

By Shiraz Habbib

Constable Sizwe Khalala is a cop on the beat who strikes the right notes. If you’ve ever arrived at King Shaka Airport on a late night flight you are bound to see Khalala at the airport’s baby grand piano, North Glen News reports.

The piano-playing policeman recently became a social media hit after a clip of him was captured by Paulo-Jorge Da Silva Martins.

The video has been viewed more than 150 000 times and shared more than 3 000 times.

Khalala, who was previously stationed at Durban North SAPS, works the late shift at the airport and often plays the piano.

He said he didn’t know about the passenger filming him until he saw notifications on his Facebook page the next day.

Listen as Khalala explains his love for music:

Khalala, who is self taught, said he plays mainly gospel music, but would like to play other genres of music.

“I joined the church at a young age and I would always admire the member who played the piano. I would sit next to him and just watch him play and that’s how I learned to play. I play mainly gospel music but as I learn more I hope to play more. I would also like to be in the music industry,” he said.

He added that through his music, he would change the perception of police officers.

“I think I’m changing the perception of police officers in a positive way. I would say I have painted another picture of the police force,” he said.
