Police appeal to Mpumalanga residents to refrain from hitchhiking
Not only does hitchhiking put the lives of people at risk, but also that of motorists who can lose both their vehicles and property at best, and their lives at worst, police say.

Mpumalanga commissioner Lieutenant-General Mondli Zuma has urged the community to use public transport, as it puts their lives at risk, Mpumalanga News reports.
A number of incidents on various roads in the province have been reported. “This appeal follows a separate incident which occurred on December 9. Two men were seen offloading a male from their vehicle and dumped him in the plantations near Sudwala outside Nelspruit.
“On the way to the scene, the police stopped the vehicle with two occupants. They returned to the scene and found the man drugged and robbed. The vehicle was searched and items belonging to the victim were found and the pair was arrested,” said the police.

The suspects, aged 63 and 70, appeared briefly at the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court yesterday. They were remanded in custody, and will appear in court today.
