A group of about 40 people gathered at 6am this morning to protest at the entrance of the Potchefstroom Hospital, Potchefstroom Herald reports.

According to Mzukisi Jam, provincial chair of Hospersa, he has been trying since 2016 to get unions together to report their queries to the North West department of health.

“Their [the department’s] reaction shows that they disrespect the workers. All they have to do is find a practical solution [to the queries].”

Rumours that protesters were preventing people from entering the hospital were doing the rounds this morning. After Jam heard the rumours, he went to the hospital to ensure that this was not happening.

When the Potchefstroom Herald arrived at the scene, there were two tyres that had been set alight.

“This was just because it was cold. We are not preventing anyone from entering or exiting the hospital,” a protester explained.

The situation is currently under control, and is being monitored by police.
