Malema and Ndlozi poke fun at old enemy Kunene’s near-death experience

The EFF leader also doesn't seem convinced that a '21 gun salute' didn't leave a scratch on his one-time friend.

EFF leaders Julius Malema and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi have finally joined the chorus of memes poking fun at the recent misfortune of businessman and socialite Kenny Kunene, who was allegedly shot at in the north of Joburg on Tuesday night.

There is no love lost between Malema and Kunene, who used to be friends but are today known for insults and accusations, particularly from Kunene aimed at Malema. Kunene used to be part of the EFF and wrote a scathing letter criticising President Jacob Zuma, only to become one of Zuma’s biggest adherents and one of Malema’s biggest critics following his departure from the EFF.

In what may have been a hijacking gone wrong or a poorly executed hit in Norwood, initial reports about the incident suggested 21 shots were fired at Kunene in a blue BMW he was travelling in with a young woman.

Kunene later said the police recovered at least 12 cartridges from the scene near Corlett Drive. He said two men jumped out of a white Lexus SUV, opened fire on him and then fled back to the M1.

Social media appears unconvinced by the story because the damage to the car looked superficial, with many suggesting Kunene may have executed a publicity stunt after his friend, Sunday Independent editor Steven Motale, claimed to have received death threats following a Cyril Ramaphosa sex exposé.

Kunene said that Motale was meant to have been driving the car but they switched rides.

Malema is no stranger to security concerns and death threats himself, having recently admitted he doesn’t like to attend funerals because of concerns about his safety.

All the same, he uploaded a picture of someone crying – presumably a reference to Kunene – with the caption “21 Gun salute!!!”

Ndlozi also uploaded memes about Kunene’s death-defying abilities in Norwood.

Their followers joined in too.
