Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has declared her allegiance to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of the national elective conference happening later this month.
The minister thus goes against the ANC Women’s League’s longstanding official support for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The women’s league has previously aligned itself with the faction that supposedly supports President Jacob Zuma, which Dlamini-Zuma has also been associated with.
Motshekga’s stance follows the ANCWL’s accusation from August that the basic education minister was “trying to rule from the grave”, and it claimed she was campaigning for a different presidential candidate under the league’s banner.
Speaking at the 16 days of activism campaign against gender-based violence on Sunday afternoon, Motshekga made it clear she had great respect Dlamini-Zuma, but would rather go with Ramaphosa as the president of the ANC.
Last month, the Northern Cape ANCWL also chose to endorse Ramaphosa.
