Mpofu mocks ANCWL’s ‘rejection of free booze’

The ANC's head of campaigns has denied reports that the party asked for the extension of liquor trading hours.

National chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Dali Mpofu has come out to ridicule the ANC Women’s League for allegedly “rejecting free booze”.

This comes after reports that liquor trading times were to be extended at venues to accommodate a large number of visitors expected in Gauteng for the ANCs 105th anniversary.

The women’s league had warned it would not allow the party’s “January 8” event to be turned into a drinking spree.

“The primary aim of January 8 is for the ANC to reflect on successes and challenges of the previous year and outline the organisation’s programme for the current year,” said the ANCWL.

Mpofu took to Twitter to mock the league for “rejecting free booze”.

The party’s deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, joined Mpofu in criticising the ANC. He said that they are going to Orlando stadium for “self praise”, and that the “mighty EFF” will build stronger branches when the ANC is gone after 2019 elections.

“They’re going to Orlando Stadium to self-praise and bury their heads deeper into the sand. Gauteng’s gone and 2019 is just a formality.

“When they are gone, we (the mighty EFF) go back to build stronger branches and prepare Ground Forces to take power from a Kleptocratic and irreparable lot in 2019 and forever!”

However, Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, who’s also the ANC’s head of campaigns, rejected reports that the party had anything to do with the extended liquor trading hours. He said the party had no authority to do so.

“We have noted reports in the media, which have been to a certain extent exaggerated, as far as them being apportioned to the organising of our event. The ANC would like to state clear and categorically that we do not decide on opening times of alcohol, beer, hops and their closure at any given time, and we have got no call with regard to that,” Mbalula said.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Liquor Board has announced that it had not yet granted permission to alcohol-selling venues planning to extend their trading hours.
