NFP calls for KZN state of emergency

The party feels the army needs to be deployed to deal with violence ahead of elections.

Following the shooting and killing of the National Freedom Party’s (NFP’s) Okhahlamba chairperson Nkeni Mabaso, the party has called for strong steps to be taken to deal with violence in the province.

In a statement, it said the “NFP is shocked and sadden by the shooting and killing of Mr Nkeni Mabaso, one of the prominent members of the NFP and also serving as the chairperson of NFP Okhahlamba”.

They said they were “aware” that Mabaso was also in the taxi business, serving as deputy chairperson of the Vulindlela Taxi Association.

“This unfortunate incident happened when Cde Nkeni Mabaso was on his way from Bergville to the ward where the NFP will be hosting a regional event in which he was part of its organising as the chairperson.

“We are very much concerned about these endless killings in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, hence we urge the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal to begin negotiations with the state President Cyril Ramaphosa on our call to urgently declare a state of emergency in this dangerous province,” said the party’s Vikizitha Mlotshwa, the NFP’s provincial chairperson.

“The National Freedom Party will, however, continue its event as planned, in remembrance of our fallen hero who always strove for the advancement of the lives of the poor.

“The NFP calls on MEC of community safety and liaison Mxolisi Kauda and Minister of Police Bheki Cele to engage the SANDF in dealing which these evil killings straight away.

“We can’t go to the 2019 elections like this,” added Mlotshwa.

They extended condolences to the Mabaso family, relatives, friends and comrades.
