Parktown parents sue Lesufi’s dept over handling of sexual abuse

By Citizen Reporter

In an exclusive interview with Power FM, a parent of learners from Parktown Boys High School has announced the intention of a group of parents to sue the department of education for violating the rights of pupils.

The parents accuse the department of ignoring crucial evidence of sexual misconduct at the school.

Power FM reports they have in their possession a number of letters sent by the parents complaining about the handling of the matter.

In the letters, parents say a report completed by a law firm at the behest of the department and intended to find evidence of racism, bullying and sexual assault at the school has not been completed.

A father, who was interviewed on Power FM’s breakfast show, insisted the law firm’s report was a whitewash, alleging “somebody is protecting somebody, somewhere”.

Gauteng education head of department Edward Masuwe said the investigation into the issues was thorough and that steps were being taken to deal with the report’s findings.

Masuwe accused the parents of wanting to sway the results of the investigation in a different direction.

The department claims it has always acted on information brought to its attention relating to alleged misconduct at Parktown Boys High, telling parents two teachers had already been disciplined and another resigned based on their investigations.
