Stakeholders meet to restore calm in troubled Coligny
This comes after the torching of four houses in the farming town on Monday.
A meeting by different stakeholders aimed at restoring calm in the troubled North West town situated between Lichtenburg and Ventersdorp is currently under way.
This follows Monday’s tense situation in the area, which left four houses burnt, two of which were partially torched. The violent protest was sparked by the judgment in the local magistrates’ court, which granted bail to farmers Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte, accused of killing 16-year-old Matlhomola Mosweu.
Mosweu died after he was allegedly pushed off a moving bakkie the accused were travelling in on April 20, but the two men denied the claims in court, saying they had caught the deceased with another boy stealing sunflower on one of the plantations.
They also claimed they took the deceased with the intention of reporting him to the police, but on their way there, the boy jumped off the moving vehicle. Doorewaard and Schutte were released on R5 000 bail each.
The stakeholders are expected to address the media at 11am on Tuesday.
