Taxify gets emergency ‘button’ for drivers

The button will link drivers to the police and emergency response, should they or a passenger find themselves in danger.

On-demand taxi service Taxify has launched an “emergency button” to create a safer working environment for their drivers.

Drivers have been targeted regularly, allegedly by meter taxi drivers, and some have even been killed.

The company has integrated the “emergency button” on their app with the emergency assistance app Namola.

The app was launched during their inaugural Taxify driver safety summit in Johannesburg where more than a hundred community leaders and drivers gathered to discuss safety.

Country manager for Taxify Gareth Taylor, said: “Passenger and driver safety is our first and foremost priority. The button will allow drivers to access rapid deployment of the correct emergency response, should they find themselves in danger.

“Namola is the leader in community safety, we have a huge sense of relief in rolling out this partnership.”

The company is working on better relationships with the police through Namola and can “enable the police to have quicker turn-around time”, Taylor said.

“We have dedicated a high priority team for instances where there is assault, theft, hijacking or violence against drivers or the passengers. Our team gets in touch with the driver or passenger and goes through the procedure one needs to follow to get a case number with the police.

“Ultimately it is up to law enforcement to enforce the law.”

While the police force is unaware of the new feature, Saps national spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said: “We welcome any legal initiative by any person, individual, or company that is going to help us in the prevention of crime – provided that it is done within the confines of the law.”

Uber, Taxify’s competitor, launched a call-back line as part of its response team last month to improve the speed of support for passengers who need assistance.
