Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail to hit parts of Limpopo

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the central and northern parts of the Northern Cape, as well as the western parts of North West.


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms that are slow moving, leading to heavy rain, large amounts of small hail and strong damaging winds in the extreme south-eastern parts of Limpopo and the eastern Highveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga on Tuesday.

The weather service has warned residents in these areas to watch out for localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements or roads and low lying areas and bridges.

Gauteng: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High.

Mpumalanga: Cloudy in the east with morning fog along the escarpment areas, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the extreme south-west.

Limpopo: Cloudy in the east with morning fog along the escarpment areas, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but isolated in the extreme south-west.

North West: Fine and warm to hot weather, becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east.

Free State: Fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east and central parts.

Northern Cape: Fine and warm to hot weather, but partly cloudy in the west at first. It will be cool along the coast and adjacent interior. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, but strong in the afternoon.

Western Cape: Fine weather in the north-west, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm but cloudy along the south coastal areas with light rain and showers.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly, but strong north of Hermanus from the afternoon. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy and cool, but cloudy in the south with isolated showers and rain. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy weather in the extreme north, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered south of the escarpment. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog patches in places over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the north-east.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, becoming south-easterly in the north by the afternoon. The expected UVB sunburn index: High.
