Spectators weigh-in on Oscar sentencing

Spectators who gathered outside the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday expressed their take on the upcoming sentencing of paralympian Oscar Pistorious.

“I think he should get 10 years in jail… Jub Jub [musician Molemo Maarohanye] and his friend are serving a sentence…the judge should do likewise,” said Milton Sibusiso Ndimande who stopped by the court precinct on his way to work.

His friend Milton Zungu disagreed.

“Incarcerating him would put his profession in jeopardy. He needs to continue training and participate in sports. I think the judge should hand him a suspended sentence.”

Millicent Mokgwe,18, said the court should support justice for abused women.

“The judge is a woman..she must come to the party. Whatever comes out at the end of the day. Justice should be served, please.”

The paralympian’s trial started on March 3 after the State charged him with premeditated

On September 12, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide for the Valentine’s Day 2013 shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The court found him not guilty of murdering her.

Pistorius was also found guilty of firing a shot from his friend Darren Fresco’s Glock pistol under a table at Tasha’s restaurant in Johannesburg in January 2013.

He was found not guilty of shooting through the open sunroof of a car in Modderfontein on September 30, 2012, and of illegal possession of ammunition.
