The Lo Down: Out with the old; in with the new

It's the start of a new year and with that comes a range of changes to beauty and fashion trends around the world.

Although we are a season behind of international styles here in the southern hemisphere, here are some general trends to look out for in 2014.

1. Au naturel

Simple and fresh is in this year, from hairstyles to make-up tones. Throw out your heavy foundations, blushers, and bronzers. This year emphasises natural beauty so invest in a beauty balm (BB) or colour correcting (CC) cream to moisturise and illuminate your skin to give it that sought after dewy freshness.

2. Orange is the new pink; blue is the new black

According to celebrity makeup artist Paolo Maranan, the only facial features to accentuate this year will be the eyes and the lips. And, if the latest European runways are anything to go by, orange lips are the way to go. This florescent pop of colour can be quite a bold choice for most so make sure you soften the look with light eye shadow and a nude cheek.

If orange isn’t for you, other colours tipped to be popular in 2014 are navy, periwinkle, and royal blue. Refreshing colour combinations, even as we head into our autumn months. And, if you’d like to experiment with a new hair colour, Garnier South Africa will soon be launching their first ever blue/black hair dye!

3. Tie it up

Ponytails are set to be back in a big way this year so if you have long hair, invest in some hair ties and if you don’t, consider getting some hair extensions.

The latest interpretations of the ponytail are a wash-tie-and-go style for daytime (lazy and loving it) and sleek, shiny and tied just below the nape of the neck for more formal occasions. A little tip: calm those flyaway strands of hair using a bit of clear lipgloss.

4. From fingers to toes

Last year was all about bold nail polish colours and geometric designs. We also saw the introduction of the matte polish finish, all of which will continue to be popular this year. A colour worth experimenting with is Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2014: Radiant Orchid, described as “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple”. Flattering to most hair and skin tones, this modern shade of purple will liven up the neutral, natural hues that this year will be known for.

Out with the overpowering; in with the subtle. According to Fashion Week’s 2014 forecast, this year we’ll be taken on a softer, more natural journey.

Happy New Year!
