The Lo Down: Style icons to keep an eye on

The style and fashion landscape in South Africa has changed drastically over the past few years with the rise of our local (and internationally recognised) fashion designers, models, and stylish celebs.

With the likes of Charlize Theron and Candice Swanepoel putting our country on the style map, here is my list of South African stars to keep an eye on this year.

Zuraida Jardine

Jardine is no stranger to the fashion scene and is often photographed out and about in her “Zeedrobe” looks, which range from vintage chic to modern avant garde styles. I predict big things on the horizon for Jardine (her own fashion line, perhaps?) so watch out for her this year. The SA Style Awards 2014 are looking at you, Zee! Follow her on Twitter: @ZuraidaJardine.

Jonathan Boynton-Lee

Top Billing presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee has become something of a style icon with his immaculately tailored looks on-screen and his preppy, casual looks off it. In addition to being one of Cosmopolitan magazine’s Sexiest SA Men in 2014, Jonathan is known for his runway appearances at both local and international fashion shows and has showcased clothing from Gucci, Abercrombie, and Calvin Klein (yes, from their underwear range). Follow him on Twitter: @jon_boyntonlee.

Brr Rogers

As the owner and designer of the #HalfWolf brand, business partner at 4Elements, art curator, model, and with a unique name like Brr, is there any doubt that we should keep our style eyes glued to this man? Rogers was on the Best Dressed list last year for GQ magazine and is set to make fashion waves this year with his cool-casual style and #HalfWolf fashion trends. Follow him on Twitter and Instagram: @BrrRogers.

Connell Cruise

The brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger, Markham,  El Toro, singing star Connell Cruise combines Ed Westwick’s dress sense with Johnny Cash’s hairdo. Style-wise, Cruise is undoubtedly one of our best-dressed male musicians. An old soul when it comes to his fashion, Cruise has a knack for nailing sophisticated looks and is no stranger to double-breasted blazers or pocket handkerchiefs. Cruise is bringing back old-school elegance in a big way. Follow him on Twitter: @connellcruise.

Gert Johan Coetzee

Gert Johan Coetzee is SA’s stylist to the stars and is acclaimed for his work with celebrities and well-known personalities both here and overseas. Locally, he has dressed celebs including Pabi Moloi, Bonang Matheba, Cindy Nell, and Liezel van der Westhuizen. Coetzee has also worked with international stars such as Kelly Rowland and the Kardashian sisters and is known for his red carpet styles. With his signature bleached, spiral hairstyle, Coetzee is a trend-setter himself and thrives on bold, high fashion. Follow him on Twitter: @gertjohan.

Thando Hopa

An accomplished lawyer by profession and exquisitely beautiful model in her spare time, Hopa was talent-scouted by Gert Johan Coetzee in a shopping mall a few years back and has since become something of a muse for the local fashion designer. Hopa was awarded Most Stylish Model at last year’s SA Style Awards and there is no doubt that 2014 is going to be just as successful for this rising star. Follow her on Twitter: @thando_hopa.
