“I visited Monosi in hospital last week and she is in good spirits but there is a long, hard road ahead on the road to rehabilitation, NSA CEO Blanche de la Guerre said in a statement.
“Unfortunately the prognosis is not good and the doctors say she will be unable to walk again. We want to provide her with every support that she requires at this time and beyond, and we’ve therefore launched a trust through which we can raise funds to assist her family to afford her the best care possible.”
Konopi was travelling with a netball team from Sedibeng, in the Vaal Triangle, between De Doorns and Worcester when the driver of their taxi lost control and the vehicle rolled down an embankment.
Eleven other players and management staff were admitted to hospital in Worcester, but all had since been discharged.
The 32-year-old Konopi was initially transferred to Tygerberg Hospital but because of the severity of her injuries she was moved to the spinal ICU at Groote Schuur Hospital, where her rehabilitation would take place.
It is not known when she will be stable enough to be moved back home.
De la Guerre encouraged members of the public as well as corporates to donate to Konopi’s cause adding that any amount would be welcome.
