The 14-time major champion confirmed reports in the golf press that his “apparel scripting” for the week would include a throwback mock turtleneck — a look he wore during his fourth and most recent Masters win in 2005.
“Well, I thought it was a pretty neat look back in the day,” Woods said of the style that was a departure in a golf world in which collared shirts for men were largely still required. “I was probably in a little bit better shape back in those days.
“I’ve won events wearing the mock. I’ve always enjoyed wearing them, and you’ll see it on Thursday.”
Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka both recalled copying Woods’s mock turtleneck look back when they were young fans.
“I definitely didn’t fill it out very well,” said 25-year-old Thomas. “I think two of me could have fit in that mock turtleneck.
“When I was that age, I wanted to do anything (Woods) did so it’s no coincidence I wore something like that.”
Koepka, the two-time defending US Open champion who also won the PGA Championship last year, also admitted following in the fashion footsteps of his hero Woods.
“Probably the first time he ever wore it was I think here (at Augusta). I can’t remember. But I remember I definitely went on to Nike’s website and bought a few of them — probably bought the red one.
“I probably had four or five of them when I was a kid,” Koepka said. “Everything always comes back into style, right?”
The prospect of the retro look come tournament Thursday wasn’t the only Woods wardrobe choice making headlines.
On Tuesday he sported a golf shirt with an unfamiliar logo at his pre-tournament press conference — a tiny cuddly looking embroidered tiger right where a Nike swoosh would usually be.
“It’s Frank, Frank my head cover,” said Woods, whose golf bag has long featured the orange fuzzy animal head.
