Books are not the only thing that will keep the community of Darnall visiting their local library.
A wide selection of toys has been donated to the Darnall Library after the KZN Provincial Library Services selected the library for the Toys at Your Library project.
Alongside a facility in which children can learn through play, the library now has a free internet service.
In addition to these new facilities, the library is being upgraded from a manual booking system to use the computerised SLIMS system.
Jerrol Nair, Darnall’s head librarian, said: “This is a proud moment for our little community of Darnall.”
KZN Arts and Culture department’s assistant manager Patiswa Sidlova officially handed over the toys to the library.
She highlighted the importance of not only reading, but playing in children’s development.
“Our strategic objective is to provide libraries and promote a culture of reading. However, we recognise that play is an essential part of development in children,” said Sidlova.
“We have donated this ‘toy library’ with a rich variety of toys including games, puzzle and make-believe toys which develop motor, sensory and social skills,” she explained.
The toys can be played with at the library but cannot be taken out like books. The event was well attended, and notable performances by the children from Lee Primary School and Darnall Secondary School were enjoyed by all.
