Black History Month celebrated

Film screenings and an exhibition held to highlight Black History Month.

February is Black History Month (BHM), which will be celebrated with film screenings and an exhibition in Durban.

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) said that the theme this year will be ‘A Century of Black Life, History and Culture’, which marks a 100 years of African Americans’ contribution in music, art, literature and shaping world politics, war, diplomacy and their centrality in the making of American history.

ASALH founded the BHM in 1926.

The Luthuli Museum in partnership with the Durban US Consulate will observe BHM and invites schools to attend the exhibition and the film screenings.

When a Spirit Moves: African American Dance in History and Art is an exhibition that will be launched at the Luthuli Museum on February 19 at 10am.

The film screenings will be running until February 28 and will feature a variety of films, including a four-part series documenting the history of American slavery called Slavery and the Making of America narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Focusing on the remarkable stories of individual slaves, it offers new perspectives on the slave experience and testifies to the active role that Africans and African Americans took in surviving their bondage and shaping their own lives.

There will be special school screenings from 10am and for the public from 2.30pm.

For school bookings contact Zinhle Nyembe, public relations officer on 032-5596822 or email profficer@luthulimuseum.org.za
