While your pets are enjoying their gammon and turkey tidbits under the Christmas tree, surrounded by their two legged family, hundreds of pets sit alone in SPCA kennels.
Durban and Coast SPCA general manager, Caroline Smith said they desperately need donations to feed the high number of pets coming in over the festive season.
“In December 2014, 1191 unwanted and stray cats and dogs were brought to the Durban and Coast SPCA. This number was even higher in January this year at a staggering 1304. Tragically only 9% managed to find a home,” said Smith.
She said the SPCA does not allow pets to be adopted as gifts, so the best way to help during this busy time is to donate food or money.
“We go through 150kg’s of pet food per day on average, and with even more mouths to feed at this time of year, we ask the public to donate pet food, particularly kitten and puppy food.”
Smith said a donation of R250 will feed four puppies for a week. R500 will buy enough dog food to feed an adult dog for a month, and R350 will provide a month’s worth of soft food for 10 cats and kittens.
“You can also get involved in fundraising, whether it be volunteering your time or doing your Christmas shopping at the SPCA Charity shop.”
Another option is to buy the 2016 SPCA calender as a present.
“The calendar features real pets of real KZN families and is a wonderful illustration of the love shared between a pet and its owner.”
The calendar will be available for purchase at The Dog Box at 11 Jack Powell Road, Ballito for the price of R180.
