Peace Boys FC triumphed after a thrilling weekend of action at the Easter soccer tournament in Nkobongo.

Hosted by the KwaDukuza Business Forum, an Nkobongo-based NGO affiliated to Docrra, the tournament attracted 20 junior U15 teams and 15 senior teams.

The U15 tournament title was claimed by Barcelona.

Teams were drawn from Nkobongo and neighbouring Shakaskraal and Shayamoya, with the talent on show of excellent quality.

It may have been played in a humble setting on an uneven, sandy pitch, but there was no denying the level of competition with tensions occasionally boiling over in the semi-finals.

Around 100 residents turned up to watch the knockout matches on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon.

“We are happy with the number of teams playing and just feel that sport is such a good way to keep communities engaged,” said Forum secretary, Philani Pityo.

Mphumuzi Gwadidi keeps close control of the ball down the left wing.

“It is important to give people, especially young people, a chance to compete and come together. Nothing does that like sport.”

The senior final proved an appropriate end to a thrilling weekend of action, as Shayamoya’s Peace Boys outlasted Nkobongo’s hometown heroes Mageza FC to win 5-4.

In the U15 curtain-raiser final, Barcelona FC beat Blue Tigers FC 1-0. Both teams were from Shayamoya.

Winning teams had the choice of taking home a sheep or new kits for the team, both of which were donated by local businesses and residents.

Pityo thanked sponsors who made the day possible and said they would be starting a league later this month.
