Don't miss the local talent dancing in this year's South African India Film and Television Awards.
RENOWNED choreographer, Geeta Kapoor, is back in Durban and spent time searching for dance talent for the South Africa India Film and Television Awards (SAIFTA) taking place at the Durban ICC Arena on Friday 6 September.
SAIFTA creative director, Kedhar Gawde, and a panel of judges, auditioned hundreds of dancers and models. The multi-cultural local cast will fuse their talents with the international team arriving the week before the inaugural awards.
About 45 local dancers will be leaving space during their rehearsals, for the 16 dancers (including Jacqueline Fernandez) who will be joining the vibrant dance acts. Rehearsals start on 21 August and will run for up to 10 hours a day, for 16 days.
Kapoor, whose string of accomplishments includes choreography of the IPL opening, is very impressed by the local dancers. She plans, as she did for the SAIFTA launch, to create eye-catching sequences that combine Bollywood, African and hip hop styles.
Kedhar Gawde, who has choreographed at New York Fashion Week, commented: “The audience of 6 000 can expect a spectacular evening of Bollywood and South African entertainment at its best. Top film directors and producers from both countries will be in the audience and we aim to impress them. Who knows what opportunities may arise for these artists thereafter?”
“That is one of the primary aims of SAIFTA, to give these talented youngsters a platform to showcase their talents to the world. Dance, fashion and music are an intrinsic part of film in India, so we celebrating these art forms in a big way.”
