uMhlanga gardener steals employer’s car

Police recovered a car stolen by an uMhlanga gardener in Waterloo last week.

DURBAN North SAPS are searching for a man who stole his employer’s car on Mendoza Drive on Wednesday (12 February) last week. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, the man who was employed as a gardener stole the resident’s blue BMW.

The vehicle which was fitted with a tracker was later recovered in Waterloo. “The resident had come home and had just left the car running for a few minutes while she grabbed something from inside the house.

“She was then informed by the domestic worker that the gardener had gotten into the car and driven off. Thankfully the vehicle was recovered but I urge residents not to leave their cars running even if they are only going inside the house to fetch something,” he said.

Deokaran added that residents should also complete reference checks before employing anybody. “Reference checks are the most commonly-used tool for screening.

“Most domestic workers and gardeners have references and it is a critical component of the hiring process,” he said.
