Carjackers arrested in uMhlanga

Five suspects caught red handed breaking into car.

FIVE men were arrested by the Durban North SAPS undercover unit after their carjacking attempts were foiled. The suspects were caught red handed and were arrested on Newlands Drive, uMhlanga on Boxing Day at about 2pm.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, the men were found in possession of a number of house break-in tools and as well as car break-in tools.

“The men had broken the window of the car parked on Newlands Drive and were in the process of trying to steal it when our unmarked police vehicle picked them up. They were found with a number of tools, including spanners, screwdrivers and other break-in items. They had also arrived in a stolen car.

“After tracing the plates, we realised the car was reported stolen a few days before. We are in the process of trying to trace them to other crimes in the area,” he said.

There was also a hijacking on 27 December in Monmouth Crescent at about 3.30pm.

“One suspect held up the owner of white Honda CRV and fled the scene. The owner of the car was unharmed and the vehicle was later recovered in KwaMashu,” Deokaran said.
