La Lucia hijacker dies, third suspect apprehended

The third hijacker who managed to escape the shootout was later captured by the SAPS K9 unit

ONE of the men involved in the hijacking of a La Lucia resident yesterday afternoon (11 February) has died. The suspect sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his head and died just hours after a high speed chase and shootout ended on Glen Anil Street.

A third suspect, also involved in the hijacking of a resident on Davallen Avenue, was also apprehended late on Wednesday evening after he managed to evade arrest at the scene.

According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, the third suspect was found hiding in a factory just metres away from the shootout.

“One of the police dogs bit him in the leg as he tried to remain concealed. He sustained bite wounds to his lower leg. The Nissan bakkie that was hijacked was damaged in the chase.

“The hijackers used an Opel Astra, which had been hijacked in Phoenix a week earlier. We also found firearms and a knife in the suspects’ car,” Powell said.
