Municipality destroys 15 shacks at Kwa-Mathambo

Kwa-Mathambo residents remain defiant and say they will begin building shacks again.

THE eThekwini Municipality’s Land Invasion unit has demolished 15 shacks at the Kwa-Mathambo Informal Settlement. This after residents from the settlement invaded municipal land on Saturday in an effort to highlight their plight and build homes, they say is owed to them. They are angry that the city has ignored their calls for better living conditions and service delivery.

In 2013, a fire tore through the settlment destroying 270 shacks and leaving hundreds of people homeless. At the time the municipality promised to build houses for the community, however, 29 families are still waiting to receive the ‘dwellings’ that were promised to them.

A Kwa-Mathambo resident said the people will keep protesting until their demands were met.

“They destroyed all the shacks and then they put all of our materials on a truck on drove off. We are angry and we are defiant. We will continue to build shacks until the municipality. We cannot live like this. We will continue to build shacks on municipal land,” he said.

Residents have started to rebuild the shacks and will continue to do so until their demands are met.
