Shack fire ravages Kenville settlemment

Many homes were saved due to the quick response of the fire department, said Robin Candy, of the Greenwood Park CPF.

ANOTHER devastating fire has left 35 people homeless. The fire, which tore through the Kenville Informal Settlement on Gumtree Road last night, consumed approximately 25 of the 400 shacks at the site. The cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Councillor Deochand Ganesh, confirmed today that no one was injured during the blaze. “The disaster management team as well as the fire department responded quickly to the scene,” he said.

Two fire engines arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze. “Metro Fire has an excellent response time. They were also quick to attend when a fire broke out in the Malacca Road Informal Settlement. There quick response prevented the fire from spreading. Metro officials and SAPS also attended,” said Robin Candy, of the Greenwood Park CPF.

By this morning the destitute have already begun to rebuild the homes, said Ganesh.

“But many are still in need of material, so we are appealing to the community to donate some building material, clothing and food,” he added.

In May a similar fire swept through the Malacca Road Informal Settlement, destroying more than 15 homes, leaving 40 people homeless.  It believed an unattended stove caused the blaze.
