Alleged hijackers arrested following high-speed chase

When two local security guards tried to intervene in what they thought was a domestic dispute they inadvertently thwarted an attempted hijacking.

FOUR suspected hijackers have been arrested following a dramatic high-speed chase on Thursday afternoon.

Three of the suspects were spotted harassing a woman in her vehicle, which was parked at the corner of North Coast Road and Orange Grove in Greenwood Park.

Thinking that it was a domestic dispute Marshal Security’s Barry Brown and Bruce McGeary approached the altercation.

“As they drove towards them to offer assistance to the woman the three suspects jumped into the car and fled up Effingham Road. The vehicle disappeared up a side road,” said Tyron Powell, of the popular security company.

The guards had lost the sight of the vehicle, however, the vehicle was later spotted along Tweed Road with only one of the suspects added Powell.

A chase ensued, eventually ending on the N2. By this time the KwaMashu SAPS was also in hot pursuit. The suspect then abandoned his vehicle on the busy roadway and fled into the bush, attempting to hide near the river.

His efforts, however, were thwarted by the SAPS’ K9 unit who managed track him down and arrest him.

The other three suspects were also later arrested, following successful investigations conducted by the Greenwood Park SAPS. The suspect’s vehicle has also reportedly been involved in numerous break-ins and robberies in the area. W/O Leon Audh of the Greenwood Park SAPS has been unable to confirm the allegation at this stage.
