Three arrested after high speed chase

Three men arrested, firearms recovered after M4 high speed chase.

THREE men were arrested on Wednesday last week after a high speed chase on the M4 before the uMhlanga turn-off. According to Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, spokesman for the Tongaat SAPS, the men have been linked to other crimes in the North Durban area.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle on the freeway and fled into the surrounding bushes but were soon arrested. Maharaj-Marie, said the vehicle, a white Toyota Corrolla, was spotted by Tongaat SAPS crime prevention unit members, who recognised the vehicle that was used in previous crimes.

“When our members tried to get closer to the suspects’ car to flag them down, they sped away. As the suspects got near La Mercy on the M4, they began tossing their firearms out the window. The high-speed chase ended just before the Umhlanga turn-off when the suspects abandoned their vehicle.

“The men are known house robbers and one of the three, was arrested previously for carjacking by our same unit. He was recently released on bail We also found a number of house break-in implements. The suspects also used the same vehicle in previous robberies and they were still fitted with the same number plates. The suspects are currently being detained at Tongaat SAPS. Their discarded firearms were unfortunately not recovered,” she said.
