Durban’s major beaches closed, safety measure
A major clean-up operation undertaken to clear Durban beaches of marine debris washed up as a result of the flooding that pelted down over the last two days.
NORTH and South beaches in Durban have been closed due to high seas and storm damage.
The decision to close beaches has been taken as a precautionary measure – to ensure the safety of residents and holidaymakers, the City said in a statement this morning. The head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa said: “There is extensive structural damage on Durban’s beaches following heavy rains that started on Sunday, 24 July.
There is also a huge amount of flotsam and jetsam as well as organic matter in the water.” Mthethwa added that a major clean-up operation has been undertaken. “The public will be notified once the beaches have been re-opened,” she added.
