Man robbed of thousands at Springfield Park bank

The man was allegedly followed from China Mall.

A CHINESE national was followed and robbed of more than R90 000 at a bank in Intersite Avenue in Springfield Park, on Wednesday just after lunchtime. According to Sydenham SAPS spokesman, Captain Myentherin Lazarus, the man was walking to the bank to deposit the money when he was accosted.

“The man was followed by the suspects from China Mall. As he was about to enter the bank he spotted the suspects running towards him, he ran into the bank and threw the bag onto the ground. The suspects then grabbed the bag with the money and fled. No shots were fired in the incident and no one was injured in the robbery,” he said.

Last year, a similar incident saw a Chinese national being chased by an armed robber, carrying an AK-47, into a Musgrave bank.

Police are urging residents to avoid carrying large sums of money, and consider electronic banking, which is a safer option.
