Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident that occurred between the Broadway and Virginia off-ramps.

A CULPABLE homicide case has been opened against the taxi driver involved in a fatal crash on the M4 on Sunday afternoon, confirmed Durban North SAPS. A section of the Ruth First Highway was closed for almost an hour while rescue personnel doused the flames and rescued some of the injured.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for Durban North SAPS, the case was still being investigated.

“We are still investigating the circumstances and feel speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident. A case of culpable homicide has been opened by the state,” he said.

On Sunday, paramedics from various services treated 15 people who were injured in the accident.

According to Kyle van Reenen of Crisis Medical, two passengers burnt to death after being trapped in the wreckage.
