Whale rescued from nets along uMhlanga beach

The successful rescue saw the adolescent whale swim off into the deep blue ocean.

A RESCUE operation unfolded along the uMhlanga beachfront this morning, after a humpback whale got caught in the shark nets.

Mike Anderson-Reade, of the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, said the eight metre whale got tangled in the nets in the early hours of this morning, and it took about two hours to ‘free willy’

“We sacrificed the net and cut it from the whale. Our first priority is to ensure the safety of the whale and our staff,” he said.

Anderson-Reade confirmed that the whale, estimated to be about two years old, was released in a good condition.

He said while 99 per cent of the calls they receive are of whales near the nets it is not unusual for them to become tangled this time of the year, as the migration has commenced.
