Councillor bemoans state of Victor Road

Local councillor, Bobby Maharajh believes 'shoddy workmanship' is the reason the road surface keeps giving way.

WARD 34 councillor, Bobby Maharajh has expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of Victor Road. This comes after three sections of pavement on the busy road collapsed due to an underground water leak.

Since November last year, sections of the Redhill road have collapsed or been damaged and been repaired. Maharajh believes ‘shoddy workmanship’ is the reason the road surface keeps giving way.

There are three depressions within a 20 metres radius due to several burst water pipes which has caused a natural depressions in the ground surface.

“As you come off Chris Hani Road (North Coast), you are forced to drive around the sinkhole forcing you into the opposite lane which is dangerous considering the driver at the top of the rise doesn’t see you until it’s too late. The depressions also pose a serious risk for pedestrians using the road.

“This is shoddy workmanship. The section affected needs to be entirely redone. I feel the municipality needs to cordon off the sections to repair it and possibly look at replacing the pipes. If we have heavy rains again I anticipate the problem will get worse. I can’t accept this,” he said.

A resident, who did not want to be named said she too was unhappy with the municipality’s effort.

“These temporary fixes are exacerbating the problem as every time there is a burst, the road is affected. As a regular user of the road I’m concerned we may have a massive sinkhole if nothing is done soon,” she said.
