Fire department confirms eMdloti Kwikspar damage is extensive

Firefighters extinguished the blaze 20 minutes after arriving on the scene.

LITTLE remains of the eMdloti Kwikspar that went up in flames this morning at approximately 8am. Scorched food containers are among the rubble left in the aftermath of the blaze.

Divisional Commander for the Umhlanga Fire Department, Jay Kanniappen said the Umhlanga Fire Department were alerted to the blaze at 8.30am.

“Within 20 minutes we had stopped the fire and the convenience store and liquor store were safe. There were 15 firefighters all together, some from uMhlanga and some from Tongaat.

The damage to the building was extensive, said Hanniappen.

“About three quarters of the building is damaged. The fire breached the roof,” he said.

While one staff member was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene, there were no serious injuries.

“The staff were however stressed out and emotional because their place of work had been destroyed,” said Kanniappen.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
