The flight between Durban and Reunion Islands commences in February next year.

AT a pre-launch event at Dube TradePort on December 11, Global Airways unveiled plans to launch flights between Durban and Réunion Island, in partnership with Fly Vetiv’Air. Direct flights will commence from King Shaka International Airport on February 26, 2026.

The collaboration could later extend to Mauritius, creating opportunities for the LIFT Airlines brand to join the operation as part of its wider regional growth strategy.

Speaking on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Department for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Head of Department Dr Nkosenye Zulu said the new link promised “increased tourist arrivals and new opportunities for exporters,” supported by the air cargo facilities at King Shaka International Airport.

“We are confident that this route will stimulate two-way tourism, strengthen trade, and support investment across sectors from agriculture and manufacturing to green energy and the creative industries,” he added.

Clr Philisiwe Ndlovu, Deputy Chairperson of eThekwini’s Economic Development Cluster, hailed the pre-launch as “a milestone for aviation and tourism in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal,” crediting the KwaZulu-Natal Route Development Committee, Lift Airlines and national partners for their work.

The new service, she said, would ease business and leisure travel while bolstering Durban’s global positioning as a resilient, sustainable gateway into Africa.

“The prospect of a new Réunion route and the long-anticipated revival of direct Durban–Mauritius flights marks a truly exciting development for the province,” said Dube TradePort CEO and Durban Direct co-chair Hamish Erskine.
